North Catasauqua Borough Council approved the removal of four aging trees surrounding North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park at its April 16 meeting.

The old trees will be replaced by new maple trees that are scheduled to be planted in the upcoming weeks. Funds for the removal of the old trees and planting of the new ones were covered by a surplus from the borough’s snow removal fund.

Council approved the purchase of three new dog waste receptacles for the park. The borough’s public works department is hopeful that these new containers will curb the amount of dog waste found at the park.

Council also approved a $7,000 proposal for necessary security updates to the borough’s fire department building. Enhancements will include new locks on all doors, a new electronic control panel and panic bars in the building.

Mayor William Molchany presented retired Catasauqua Police Officer Scott Rothrock with a proclamation from the borough.

Rothrock won the inaugural A-Treat Heroes campaign in March. His picture will appear on A-Treat packaging, and the Fraternal Order of Police Le-Hampton No. 35 received a $10,000 donation from A-Treat and the Jaindl family on Rothrock’s behalf.
