Letter to The Editor

To the Editor:

We are in total agreement with everything stated by Mary Bittner Henry in her Letter to the Editor in the April 5 edition of the Northwestern Press concerning God no longer being allowed in our schools as He was when we were in school.

I, Susan, having graduated from high school in 1969, also have memories of my teachers reading from the Bible, praying, etc.

My husband and I feel sorry for kids these days. Many have no moral compass to guide them through life.

They have no solid foundation. Many young parents say they are too busy to take them to Sunday School and church. How many kids are even taught the Golden Rule?: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”

Nowadays, kids are allowed to do or not do what they want, even if it is disrespectful, such as not saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

And, we feel sorry for the teachers, too. They are allowed to teach kids about all the religions practiced in the world, but if they mention the name of “Jesus,” or pray with a student, they can get into serious trouble.

No wonder our culture is spiraling downward. And, as Mary said, take note of all the violence in movies, on TV, and in video games.

This is what is influencing the violent acts being done by our young people. Passing laws to take away our right to bear arms will not solve this problem.

Why don’t we start instead by boycotting all the violent movies, TV shows, and video games? No, life in this world will never be perfect.

But, if the adults in these kids’ lives would not allow them to “feed” on this violence, we think we’d see an improvement.

And all of us, as adults, need to set a good example.

We agree with Mary - we need to put our Christian faith back into our schools.

This faith in God is what this nation was founded on by our forefathers.

We need to provide this solid foundation, this moral compass, not just in schools, but in every part of our lives, for the benefit of this young generation.

And yes, we, as Christians, need to do what it says in II Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, who are called by my name, humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Yes, we need to once again pledge our allegiance ... to“one nation, under God.”

May God help us if we don’t!

Thank you, Mary Bittner Henry, for telling it like it is.
