For Catasauqua’s baseball team, it has been about momentum.

With a young, basically inexperienced team, a bit of momentum easily can shift the tide of the season. And for the Roughies, it temporarily did.

Catty had an impressive three-game winning streak in which they outscored their opponents, 29-8, and it lifted them back into the Colonial League and district race with an overall 4-5 record and 4-4 league mark.

Unfortunately, the Roughies couldn’t sustain it.

They suffered an 11-1 loss to Lehighton last Saturday and a doubleheader loss to Southern Lehigh Monday night that suddenly dropped them to 4-8 on the campaign. The Roughies had unfortunate games against Northern Lehigh and Pen Argyl postponed due to weather issues, two games that could have swung their way during their brief run.

“We were on a nice roll,” said head coach Steve Bradley. “The games we lost to weather really hurt us. Our schedule seemed to work in our favor and then that happened.

“We couldn’t get going against Lehighton and we used four pitchers. They hit us hard. Now, we have to get it together down the stretch.”

Bradley has been pleased with the outings of pitchers Zach Bilder and Andrew Torres, who both suddenly will be thrust into big roles this week to help keep the Roughies’ postseason hopes alive. Catty nearly finds itself in a must-win situation with three road games to end the week with Wilson Wednesday, Saucon Valley Thursday, and Palmerton Friday.

“Zach (Bilder) has thrown well and he has had a big bat all season for us,” said Bradley. “Torres had a big week for us during our winning streak and he has put it all together. He (Torres) works hard and continues to develop for us.”

He also stated how the team has had trouble filling the void at second base left by senior Andrew Brett, who will miss the season due to surgery from a football injury.

“We have a hole in the lineup without Brett,” he said. “Brett is a very smart player and he and Corey Raysely formed a great 1-2 at the top of our lineup. Brett is a solid defensive player and does all the little things. He also was a leader out there.”

By the numbers, the Roughies likely will need to get at least five wins in the final eight games to reach the postseason.

“We will need to get five wins and then see what happens,” added Bradley. “We are capable of doing this and we can’t afford any more letdowns.”
