Unlike most basketball coaches, Ed Seidick loves to watch videotapes of games.

However, Seidick began to lose his desire during the latter part of the season. The Catasauqua girls’ basketball coach began to think it was time for a change.

“I love to watch videotapes and break down games, “ he said. “But about the last quarter of the season, I wasn’t putting in the time that I usually did. I knew I was compromising myself and the kids.

“I wasn’t doing the kids any justice and my desire wasn’t the same.”

After four years of guiding the Roughies’ program, Seidick recently resigned as head coach. Over the span, he compiled an overall 20-68 record. Catty finished the past two seasons with 4-18 records.

“I told the kids at the end of the season that I was going to take some time to evaluate everything,” he added. “It was a long year and we put a lot of effort into it. The end of the season was pretty rough.

“There were a lot of factors that go into everything and you think about it in bed at night. It all weighted toward my decision.”

Catasauqua athletic director Tom Moll realized and recognized Seidick’s efforts.

“I wanted Ed to come back and I know it was a tough decision for him,” said Moll. “I would like to thank Ed and his coaching staff for the countless hours they invested in our program. Although we did not always see the results that we wanted on the court, it wasn’t from lack of effort by our coaching staff and players. I wish Ed the best of luck in whatever the future holds for him.”

Seidick noted that his decision wasn’t strictly based on winning. It was a series of factors that stymied the program in the process.

“The injury bug really hit us hard the last couple of seasons,” he said. “There are about 150 girls in the high school. We had a lot of girls who played basketball, but we didn’t have a lot of girl basketball players.

“But I really will miss the girls. That was the hardest part.”

Since 1989, Seidick has been in the coaching ranks. He has 16 years of basketball experience coupled with 12 years of varsity baseball. He previously coached for six years in the girls’ basketball program at Northampton, where he currently teaches.

Seidick isn’t sure if coaching again will be in his future. He did recommend assistant Mark Seremula for the position.

“It took me a while to get out of coaching mode,” he said. “I was watching all of the playoff games. I’m sure I am going to miss it. I don’t know what I am going to do next year. Hopefully, Mark Seremula will be the next coach.

“But I’ll work on some woodwork and other things at home. I’ll find stuff to do until my wife tells me to get back out there.”
