Parkland honors fellow students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Close to 2,000 Parkland High School students attended a “walkout” March 14 at the school to honor the 17 killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland, Fla., shooting on Feb. 14.

The students gathered in the gymnasium to see a video presentation their fellow classmates prepared to highlight the lives of each person killed in the rampage.

The overwhelming emotion seen on the students faces during the presentation was sadness with tears being shed as each individual’s hopes and dreams were read, as a photo appeared on a large screen.

Many of the Parkland students expressed anger at the easy access to guns in America and especially those labeled as assault weapons.

The opening video was by Daniel Duff, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, whose cousins Collin and Kyleigh Duff are students at Parkland High School.

He recalled the fear he and his fellow students felt as the shooting began and how they hid to protect themselves from the shooter.

He doesn’t recall how he came to be running out of the school with his hands held high but was relieved to have escaped, unlike several of his close friends.

His cousins, Collin and Kyleigh, were stunned to hear the news of the shooting and watched news coverage for hours hoping to see him alive.

They were extremely relieved when Daniel finally contacted them.
