Willard A. Gower Sr., 84, formerly of Whitehall, died April 4, 2018, at the Phoebe Home, Allentown. He was the husband of Miriam A. (Delahunty) Gower for 63 years.

Born in West Pittston, he was a son of the late Otto and Pearl (Traher) Bower.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and philosophy from Washington & Jefferson College.

He was in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War era.

He was a systems engineer at IBM in both Philadelphia and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for 25 years before he retired in 1989.

He was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he had been on the church council and taught Sunday school.

He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and for hospice, was a Boy Scout leader and coached a church basketball team when he lived in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Willard A. Jr. and his wife Sharon of Salem, N.J., Bernard G. and his wife Teri of Walkersville, Md., Susan A. and her husband Edward Place of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Dr. Deborah L. and her husband Harold Whittaker of Allentown; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

There will be a calling hour 9-10 a.m. in the gathering area, followed by a memorial service 10 a.m., both April 12 at the church, 3355 MacArthur Road, Whitehall.
