An early spring snowstorm last week delayed the start of the spring sports season. Salisbury’s track and field season opener on Tuesday was left in jeopardy as the Lehigh Valley was trounced with eight inches of snow, but it looks as if the Falcons’ opener was on as scheduled as of Press deadline.

The Falcons were scheduled to host Pen Argyl and Palmerton Tuesday, in a meet held after Press deadlines.

Leading Salisbury’s boys team this season is senior jumper Jack Reichenbach, a district champion and a state medalist last spring. The University of Rhode Island commit not only won the district title in the long jump with a mark of 23-5 1/2, but he also placed second in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump at districts.

He also made a memorable run at the state meet at Shippensburg University. Reichenbach placed sixth in both the long jump (21-4 1/4) and high jump (6-2) at states. He was seeded first in the state in the long jump.

Plenty of other Falcon boys have high hopes in 2018 after successful spring seasons last year.

Sophomore Timmy Buda is one of those standouts after he came in fourth place in the 200-meter dash last year at districts and sixth in the 100-meter dash.

Buda will likely be Salisbury’s top sprinter, but the Falcons also possess a number of talented distance runners on the track. Sophomores Michael Sosnowski and Shane Artis, who placed ninth and 10th in the 1600-meter run last season at districts, respectively, are both returning.

The top district finisher last season on the girls’ side was Rylee Donaldson, who placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in 1:00.17. The Falcon senior won’t be returning this spring, but plenty of talent will be back, particularly in the field events.

Junior Erica Holben excelled in both the long jump (fifth place with mark of 16-8 1/2) and high jump (eighth place with mark of 4-8) at districts in 2017. Sophomore Olivia Hoeing took care of the other jumping event, placing ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 32-6.

Junior Madison Jewell continued Salisbury’s tradition of successful pole vault athletes last year, capped with a fifth place finish at districts.

Seniors Margaux Petruska (eighth in javelin), Jacara Smith (10th in discus) and Sarah McGee (10th in 300-meter hurdles) rounded out the Lady Falcons’ top 10 finishers at last year’s district meet that will be returning.
