The iconic musical “West Side Story” comes to the Emmaus High School stage at 7 p.m. March 21, 22 and 23; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 24, and 2 p.m. March 25, auditorium, Emmaus High School, 500 Macungie Avenue, Emmaus.
Director Jill Kuebler also produces the Emmaus High School production, assisted by musical director and choreography coordinator Rita Cortez, choreographer Luke Csordas, pit orchestra conductor Doug Bolasky, costume designer Lori Ross, and sound and lighting designer Dave Dougherty.
With music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents, the musical opened on Broadway in 1957.
The Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards in 1958, receiving two. The 1980 Broadway revival received three Tony nominations. The 2009 Broadway revival garnered four Tony nominations, receiving one.
“Maria,” “America,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty” and “A Boy Like That” are among the musical’s best-known songs.
