Ralph D. Romano Sr., former VFW post commander

Ralph D. Romano Sr., 85, formerly of Bethlehem and Northampton, died Feb. 27, 2018, in Holy Family Manor, Bethlehem. Born in Roseto, he was the son of the late Dominic and Anna (Ruggiero) Romano. He was the husband of the late Eugenia “Jeanne” (Sastorecz) Romano.

He was a 1950 graduate of Liberty High School.

He earned an associate degree in engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

An U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he was aboard the U.S.S. Wasp and was a plane captain and air crewman based at the Naval Air Station, Chincoteague, Va.

He was an area expediter with The Bechtel Corporation of San Francisco, Calif., for 24 years, and retired in 1998. Previously, he was a project planning coordinator with Ingersoll-Rand Company, Phillipsburg, N.J., for 18 years.

He was a former member of at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Howertown, where he was on the consistory. He and his wife were church youth group leaders.

He was a member and former Post Commander of Harry F.W. Johnson American Legion Post 379, Bethlehem, where he was on the honor guard.

He was a past coach at both the Freemansburg-Bethlehem Township and Northampton Athletic Associations. He was a past assistant fire chief at the Nancy Run Fire Company, Bethlehem Township. He was on the executive committee, the board of trustees and was a past president and vice president of the Murska Sobota Sister City Association, Bethlehem.

He is survived by a daughter, Annamarie and her husband Bill Zeky of Northampton; three sons, Dominic and his wife Sue of Northampton, Ralph and his wife Lisa of Allentown and Ryan and his wife Amy Grube of Lancaster; and 10 grandchildren, Billy and his wife Brittany, Nicole, Lindsay, Jesse, Brittany, Cierra, Lucia, Nicholas, Megan and Max.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lucy Ruggiero.
