Girls look to keep up winning streak
The Whitehall girls basketball team has found their footing recently, winning back-to-back games as they look to keep that streak rolling this week.
Unfortunately, they weren’t able to hit the hardwood on Tuesday to see if they could have made it three straight wins. Their game against Nazareth was postponed until a later date. That makes for a full slate of games in the coming weeks as they must make up the Pleasant Valley game as well.
With the game canceled, head coach Dwight Repsher was left with wondering what might have been. His team has been playing well and he was excited to get back onto the floor against a division rival. He half-jokingly said that it hit just in time to halt their momentum and break their rhythm.
They were coming off wins against Pocono Mountain West and Wyomissing. They won each game handily, defeating the Panthers by 18 last Friday, and the Spartans by 20 on Saturday.
“That was a pretty nice forty-eight hours,” said Repsher.
One of the keys to winning both the games was their balanced scoring. In the win against the Panthers, eight different players scored. That was the case again Saturday versus the Spartans.
“We’re getting pretty decent contributions from everyone, and that’s big,” said Repsher.
At times during the season they had trouble scoring the basketball. Repsher said that a lot of factors can play into that, and one of those could be that kids needed to get comfortable and know that all their roles are important to the success of the team. That came to the forefront in both those wins.
“We played well,” said Repsher. “It almost appears that we’re starting to get that team chemistry where we’re starting to get good.”
He believes that getting everyone involved has helped them see the big picture.
“What I’m happy about is that everyone is taking a little bit of ownership,” said Repsher. “If that’s the case, that’s a really good sign.”
In Friday’s game, he wasn’t sure what to expect from PMW. They were 4-6 heading into the game, and had played Northampton tough the prior evening, losing by seven.
However, Whitehall set the tone from the opening tip, scoring 18 points in the first quarter to take a 14-point lead into the second quarter. From that point, they maintained their strong, balanced attack to win 51-33.
Even when the Panthers ramped up their defensive pressure and tried to turn the game into a track meet, Repsher said they withstood the onslaught and played their style of basketball.
Grace Clary led the way with 15 points, while Alix Buskirk dropped in 13. Repsher said that Clary’s big offensive night was a good sign, noting she’s been playing well defensively, especially when it comes to rebounding the ball, and hopefully a strong offensive game will boost her confidence.
Repsher also liked the play of Ariana Hines who finished with seven points. He said she’s playing her best basketball right now, and they’ll need the senior to keep it going as they look to mount a playoff run.
Brianna Smith, Cassie Due and Olivia George all had four points in the win, while Taryn Sayre added two.
Repsher added that their meeting against Wyomissing was also a mystery when it came to expectations. Since they’re from Berks County, they don’t have a good read on them from a game-to-game standpoint. However, he knows that they “got clobbered” last year by the Spartans, losing by 19 points at their place last January.
They were also coming into the game 12-1 and had lost only one player from last year’s squad. But that didn’t phase the Zephs as they once again got out to a fast start, taking the first quarter by eight points, 12-4.
“We came out an played well, and got a good lead,” said Repsher.
He said that when the Spartans made a run and their bigs began to hurt them a little bit, they maintained their poise and won the second half by two points, handing Wyomissing a 59-39 loss.
In that win, Buskirk had a big day from the floor, finishing with 18 points. Olivia George knocked down 11, while Due had nine and Clary chipped in with eight. Hines finished with six points for the night, while Sayre had three and Katie Kelly and Smith each had two.
Those two wins much their record to 4-7 on the year. This week they’ll meet Dieruff and Hazleton as they look to continue their winning ways.
