Crash, fire closes I-78

A 30-year-old Brooklyn, New York man was uninjured when his tractor-trailer caught fire 5:20 a.m. Oct. 22 on I-78 westbound near the Hamburg exit, Berks County.

State Police Troop L, Hamburg, say Jamal Abdul Haqq was westbound in the right lane of I-78 when he lost control of his tractor-trailer combo, causing it to leave the roadway, striking the bridge abutment on the north shoulder.

The rig then traveled across the right and left lanes of the roadway and struck the concrete center median.

The big rig combo then became engulfed in flames, police say.

Haqq was able to exit his tractor before it burst into flames.

I-78 was closed in both directions until the fire was extinguished, police say.

According to police, vehicle information was not available due to the fire.

Hagg was cited before Magisterial District Judge Kim L. Bagenstose, Hamburg.

Troopers from the State Police Troop L, and Hamburg, Bernville, Hamburg, Port Clinton, Shoemakersville, Strausstown fire companies, along with Hamburg Fire Police and V and M Towing assisted at the scene.
