Gerard J. “Jerry” Black

Gerard J. “Jerry” Black, 64, of Allentown, died under hospice care Nov. 18, 2017, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Claire E. (DerRohn) Black. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late James and Veronica (Dagney) Black.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for many years, retiring as a technical sergeant. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Training Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, the Longevity Service Award with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon, the Unit Award with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster serving Aug. 2, 1990 to Sept. 18, 1995 in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked various positions, most recently at DSC Logistics in Bethlehem.

He was a member and an usher at Concordia Lutheran Church, Macungie.

He was a volunteer for Lehigh Valley Hospice and the Road to Recovery, driving cancer patients to their treatments.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Gerald J. Jr., of Arkansas and William, of Lehighton; brothers, James and his wife Joan, of Quakertown and Joseph, of Orange County, Calif; two grandchildren.

Contributions may be made in his memory to Concordia Lutheran Church, 2623 Brookside Road, Macungie, 18062.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
