Northwestern Elementary students celebrate Tutu Tuesday

Northwestern Elementary celebrated Tutu Tuesday Oct. 17.

“Tutu Tuesday evolved as a way to celebrate having Whoopi, a Seeing Eye pup in training, in our school,” second grade teacher Laura George explained.

Last year, Whoopi attended school with George every Wednesday and spent the day in the classroom working with the students as well as accompanying them to other classrooms.

George said bringing Whoopi to school would be a great way to prepare her as a helper dog, perhaps even in a classroom somewhere.

“Whoopi decided to wear a tutu last Tuesday, and when the kids asked why, I replied, ‘because it’s Tutu Tuesday! Where’s yours?’” she said.

As a result of George’s comment, staff and students decided it would be a fun way to celebrate Whoopi.

Whoopi’s last day at Northwestern was Oct. 24 as she began attending puppy college Oct. 25 at The Seeing Eye, Morristown, N.J.

While there, Whoopi will learn how to be a Seeing Eye dog in preparation to becoming a helper dog.

George expected her next Seeing Eye dog at the beginning of this month, when she will begin socializing a new pup.
