Calvin R. Cassell
Calvin R. Cassell, 68, of Wescosville, died Oct. 11, 2017, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. He was the husband of Barbara (Serfass) Cassell. They recently celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary. Born in Mesa, Ariz., he was the son of the late Cecil and Ella Mae (Baker) Cassell.
He was a Sgt. First Class in the U.S. Army, serving 20 years active duty. During his service, he fought in the Vietnam War for two years and the Panama Canal Zone for two years, retiring June 30, 1968. After his honorable discharge he worked as a prison guard at the Arizona State Prison, followed by the PA Jobs Center in Jim Thorpe, where he assisted veterans who needed employment. After 15 years, he retired from this position in 2004.
He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Wescosville, for three years and prior to that was an active member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Emerald, where he served as a lay leader and on the PPR Committee.
He enjoyed summers in Delaware at the Tuckahoe Acres campground where he mastered the art of clamming, crabbing and fishing. He adored his cats, Sassy and Sissy and looked forward to long excursions riding his Harley motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife; son, Brian R. and his wife, Angela, of Tamaqua; stepson, Michael Gruber and his wife Teresa, of Allentown; brother, Lee Edward, of Germany; grandchildren, Erica, Amelia, Michelle and Jesse. He was predeceased by a sister, Cecilia.
Contributions may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, or St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
