Arthur Hayden Anderson Sr.
Arthur (Andy) Hayden Anderson Sr., 85, of Whitehall, died Sept. 26, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Sybil (Angela) Anderson. They were married for 58 years. Born in Porus, Jamaica, he was the son of Arthur and Zoe (Amy) Anderson.
After high school graduation, he worked for the Jamaican government import/export office for 18 months.
He graduated in 1961, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in geology, from Howard University, Washington, D.C. In 1963 he earned a master’s degree in chemistry from American University.
After graduating from American University, he worked for IBM in Kingston and Woodstock, N.Y., during which time he became a U.S. citizen, and lived in Lexington, Ky., retiring in 1990. After retiring, he was an adjunct professor at the University of Kentucky in the chemical engineering department. He also took up the sport of golf.
He was a LifeMaster Gold member of American Contract Bridge League and led bridge games and tournaments.
He was a choir member and on the finance board at Trinity United Methodist Church, Lexington, Ky.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling around the United States, “cruising” throughout the Caribbean and spending summers and holidays with their kids and grandkids.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Arthur Jr. and his wife Dawn, of Fogelsville, Althea, of Seattle, Wash. and Shelly and her husband Scott Jackson, of Puyallup, Wash; four grandchildren, Chloe Jackson, of Puyallup, Lauren Anderson, of Fogelsville, Gabriella Jackson, of Puyallup, Wash. and Brooke Jackson, of Puyallup, Wash.
