The Ironton Rail-Trail Oversight Commission will have its annual historical walk Oct. 28. Open to the public, the walk begins 9 a.m. at the Chestnut Street barn, off MacArthur Road. The three-hour leisurely pace will stop occasionally for the group to view historical locations.
The IRT trail traverses the sites of the first Portland Cement Company in America, Coplay Cement Company, and the first anthracite-fueled iron company, Thomas Iron Company in Hokendauqua - both of which contributed to the Industrial Revolution. There are 23 other historical sites to tour.

Coplay Public Library has a special display with books written by veterans and authors of best-sellers such as “Medal of Honor,” “Fourth Star,” “Time to Lead” and others. The cabinet has photographs of veterans as well. The library is asking residents to provide the library with photos of military personnel - veterans and those now serving - to add to the display. This is fitting with Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
The library is also working on a project called “Operation Gratitude.” Letters and photographs are forwarded to military personnel and first responders.
