Coleman in D-11 golf tourney
Leah Coleman made sure she was going to make it to the District 11 Golf Championship, topping the field among the AAA participants.
The junior fired a 96 at Olde Homestead Golf Club on Oct. 2. It was the top qualifying score among the District 11 AAA girls playing in the event.
As a result of her winning score, Coleman moved to the D-ll Championship at Lehigh Country Club which was set for Oct. 9 but was postponed until Oct. 11, which subsequently moved back to Olde Homestead. She stumbled a bit late in her round, finishing with a 103. Four D-11 AAA female golfers moved on to the East Regional Tournament with Blue Mountain’s Sophie Orsulak topping the list with a 77.
Head coach John Conrad said that he got to see Coleman play in his role as a course marshal. He said they were right behind Coleman on the course and said that her final score was a little bit deceiving because she was at an 81 through 16 holes. Conrad said that she got in trouble with the hazards on the last few holes which raised her final score.
“She was really right in the thick of things, but she had those few bad holes at the end,” said Conrad.
Conrad said that Coleman fought throughout her round. He said that her play in both the district qualifier and the championship was impressive.
“I was very happy for Leah and how she played,” said Conrad. “I thought that [winning the qualifier] was a great accomplishment as a junior. She’ll get another crack at it next year.”
Conrad said that Coleman has consistently progressed as a golfer since she’s been a part of the team. She puts the work in during the offseason and it’s paid dividends.
“She’s been one of my, if not the most, improved players since last year,” said Conrad. “She has that drive to get better. She’s a true asset to the team.”
Senior Patrick Skinner failed to make it to the D-ll Championships. He shot a 95, tying him for 32nd among the AAA field. Conrad said that Skinner missed the cut by five or six swings.
Conrad said that for the last three years, Skinner has literally been the face of the program.
“He’s been our leader for the past three years, both in terms of experience and scoring average,” said Conrad. “It’s going to be a difficult void to fill without a doubt.”
The program will also lose Ben Antonchak, Tyler Ringenberger and Griffin Wampole to graduation.
As Conrad reflected on the season, he said that they had three goals in mind as they began match play in August. He knew there were teams they should beat, teams they could beat, and teams that they weren’t quite ready to beat, on their schedule. That’s essentially how it played out as they finished with a 6-10 record.
Conrad said that their regular season results as well as their EPC tourney performance solidified his expectations.
“What we believed would happen, pretty much came out to be true,” he said.
He’s now looking toward next season and believes they’re going to continue their upward trend. His roster has plenty of experience returning which leads to his optimism.
“I can’t wait to see what next year brings,” said Conrad.
