Catherine Barnstone Szafran will unveil three never-before-seen works from the late Myron Barnstone during an open house 7-10 p.m. Oct. 20 at the old Barnstone Studios, 52 N. Second St. The artist, who died Oct. 29, 2016, at the age of 83, kept his own paintings and sketches under lock and key.
Barnstone alumnae and photographer Bill Stank will display 68 photos of original Barnstone paintings. Barnstone’s paintings, and works by some of his students, will also be available for viewing at the studio noon-4 p.m. Oct. 21.
At 2 p.m., another alumnae, Roger Brinker, will present Barnstone’s artistic lineage.
As an art teacher, he was known for often being painfully direct in his critiques. Rather than being intimidated by his intensity, students continuously filled his classes. A good measure of Barnstone’s effectiveness is how hundreds of his alumni have become art instructors, authors, professional artists and leaders in industrial design, pastels, photography and even animation. Barnstone recorded his lectures, and they continue to be available at BarnstoneStudios.com.
Barnstone Szafran is in the process of creating both a book about Barnstone’s life and work and also a nonprofit educational foundation to restore and exhibit his paintings and to further art education.
Those planning to attend either event are asked to bring a dish to share.
For more information, call Barnstone Szafran at 301-788-6241.
