Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association’s community parade is set for Oct. 17.
First held in the mid-1950s, the parade has not missed a beat for more than six decades, as large crowds still gather on sidewalks along Second and Chestnut streets. Unlike some parades where judges award prizes to first-place recipients in various categories such as bands, floats and marching groups, Coplay Recreation & Welfare gives each entry a stipend for participation.
The 7 p.m. parade begins on the west end of Chestnut Street, proceeds to Second Street and south to Hokendauqua Street. Participants and spectators can then head to the Coplay Saengerbund pavilion, where hot dogs, soda and refreshments will be served.
The rain date is Oct. 24.
Along with East Hills Middle School of the Bethlehem Area School District, the Whitehall High School Marching Zephyr Band, Allentown Almost Marching Band, the Rajah Oriental Band and a drum and bugle corps will be featured.
The association funds the parade from its annual community campaign.
