Water tank maintenance bid awarded

South Whitehall commissioners recently awarded a bid of $221,381 to Corrosion Control Corporation for water tank maintenance during the next five years.

The township owns three tanks - the PPL water tower, the Brickyard Road reservoir and the Cedarbrook tank - that require annual upkeep.

Although 75 companies downloaded the bid documents, only one was received and opened.

Jerry Charvala, utilities group leader, commented on the tank maintenance.

“This is imperative for good water quality,” Charvala said. “We are proactive to address any issues with the tanks.”

Charvala said one of the first projects will be to remove diesel fuel accumulated on the outside of the tank at PPL.

Bid work includes initial inspection, interior and exterior cleaning of the tanks, and emergency services.

In the matter of road improvements, commissioners approved a bid of $66,000 to Rota-Mill Inc. for milling equipment services and $9,770 to Sealmaster for tack oil and application equipment for a project on Broadway.

Commissioners granted approval to Fire Chief Matthew Bertsch to obtain architectural design services for a proposed addition to the Greenawalds Fire Company building.

He said the drawings from Portner and Hetke architects will cost $5,000.

Bertsch noted the fire company does not have showers or adequate toilet facilities for men and women.

The proposal includes space for training and meetings on the first floor and bunk rooms, offices and bathrooms on the second floor.

“This is the first step in a long process to move us in the right direction,” Bertsch said.
