Alex Suter had hoped to shoot closer to his season average at Monday’s Colonial League Golf Championship. But the Salisbury senior can’t be too disappointed with a score that was eight strokes better than he had in his first trip to the league tournament.

“It was OK,” Suter. “It wasn’t the best, wasn’t the worst. I shot better than last year, but I’m not too happy with it.

“Putting was good. Chipping was good. Drives were good. Longer irons hurt me today.”

Suter shot 92 Monday at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course to tie for 22nd place. It was eight strokes better than he shot at the tournament last year as a freshman.

While he’s been playing golf since he was a toddler, Suter started taking the game more seriously after his freshman season and brought his average down 10 strokes from 92 last year.

“I’ve had a golf club in my hand since I was like three,” he said. “But I started practicing really hard during freshman year. I go over to Wedgwood a lot. I was there practically every day this summer.”

Suter moves on to next week’s District 11 qualifying tournament at Olde Homestead Golf Club. It will likely take a round in the mid-to-low 80s to make the district championship field.

“I like that place a lot,” he said. “I shot 77 up there when we played them. I know the course. It’s a tough course. It’s going to be challenging. The greens are going to be really fast, but it’s going to be a fun day.”

Another 77 would certainly get him into the district tournament Oct. 9 at Lehigh Country Club. His first goal is to improve on Monday’s performance. When asked what he hoped to shoot in the qualifier, he responded “Shoot better than I did here [at leagues], hopefully qualify for districts.

“It’s on to the qualifier. This round is in the past. It’s over. Can’t fix it. Just gotta move on.”

Salisbury teammate Mark Wilson shot 100 at the tournament, while the Falcons’ Ashley Karol shot 131 for fifth place in the girls tournament.

Moravian Academy’s Drew Wagner won the tournament with a one-over par 72 while leading the Lions to the team title with a five-player team score of 394, 21 strokes better than second place Southern Lehigh.

Southern Lehigh’s Maddie Siuta won the girls tournament with an 84.
