Marianne D. Hayes
Marianne D. Hayes, 82, of Emmaus, died peacefully Sept. 18, 2017, at Lehigh Valley Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late John S. “Jack” Hayes, who died Jan. 31, 2017. Born in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Isidore and Anna (Gaglione) DiSalvo. She grew up in Williamsport and attended Chestnut Hill College.
She was an active member of the Church of St. Ann, Emmaus. She volunteered at St. Ann Church and School for over 50 years. A constant presence in the school, she helped anywhere needed. She especially loved her time as a volunteer assistant in first and second grades, keeping a watchful eye over the children. These children would grow to adulthood yet continue to remember her and ask for her. She volunteered in many other church and school activities including the St. Ann Women’s Alliance, the school board, Fall Fest, telephone ministry and was co-author of the St. Ann cookbook.
She was active in the community, working as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Ecumenical Food Bank.
Her skills in the kitchen were legendary; Grandma’s Chicken Soup was both delicious and known to cure all ailments, her meatballs and sauce were incredible and her holiday dinners and perfect prime rib were not to be missed. Nothing gave her more joy than spending time with those she loved.
She is survived by daughters, Kathleen (William) Taylor, Teresa (Richard) O’Flynn, Anne (Louis) DeVoto, and son, John; grandchildren, Maureen (Matthew) Vitris, Meghan Taylor, Allison Hayes, Thomas DeVoto, Emily DeVoto, Richard O’Flynn and Caroline DeVoto.
