Conrad ‘impressed’ after EPC golf tourney

With the regular season completed, the Whitehall golf team turned its attention to the league championships which got underway this week at Woodstone Country Club.

The Zephyrs finished the season 6-10 overall, picking up three more wins than the previous year.

And when they convened at Woodstone on Tuesday for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Golf Championships, head coach John Conrad viewed the tourney as an opportunity to beat teams that had defeated them during the regular season.

The way his team responded left the fourth-year coach “impressed.” After posting a 397 among their top four players, including Leah Coleman, Conrad said that it was good enough to top six other teams in the EPC Championships. Now, the official team scoring has the Zephs listed at No. 12 with a 415, but Conrad said he factored in Coleman’s round (98) to arrive at that figure, noting that the junior had been among their top four players all season.

That score bested the 400 that Freedom posted, one of the schools that had beaten them in match play during the season. Conrad said that was his goal heading into the tourney and they were able to accomplish that feat.

“That’s what I was hoping to do and that kind of solidifies the season for us,” said Conrad.

Conrad said that the dry conditions made the course challenging. He said that the greens were rolling much faster than the last time they played at Woodstone. While it was a factor they had to deal with, he said they kept plugging away on each hole.

“They battled throughout the day and achieved the goals that we set out for the tournament,” said Conrad.

Conrad said that Coleman’s performance earned he a medal, finishing fourth among the girls. Emmaus’ Michelle Cox finished first with an 82, while Stroudsburg’s Olivia Patrow was second with a 91. Both golfers earned exemptions to next week’s District 11 championships.

Conrad said that Patrick Skinner finished with a 96. He said he had one “blow-up hole,” but other than that he shot a pretty good round.

The boys individual champion was Matt Kalamar from Allentown Central Catholic who shot a 76, while team top honors went to Liberty who posted a 331.

The Zephyrs will now prepare for the district qualifier that’s set for Oct. 2 at Olde Homestead Golf Club.
