Stephen L. Chanitz Sr., City inspections chief

Stephen L. Chanitz Sr., 83, of Bethlehem, died Sept. 20, 2017. Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Stephen J. and Catherine (Mlinko) Chanitz. He was the husband of Barbara (Chapo) Chanitz for 61 years.

He was a 1952 graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School.

He was in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He worked in the Number 2 Roll Shop for Bethlehem Steel. He began working at the City of Bethlehem as zoning officer, and then became the Bureau of Inspections chief, until he retired after 39 years.

He was a parishioner of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church.

He was a member of St. Bernard’s, the Lehigh Boosters and Goodfellows Club. He coached many youth sports.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline; two sons, Gregory and his wife Shirley, and Stephen L. Jr. and his life partner Emily S. Hoover; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Chanitz; four grandchildren, Christopher and his wife, Jennifer Chanitz, and Tyler, Ian and Samantha; and two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Quinn.

He was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Chanitz.

Contributions may be made to the church, 1861 Catasauqua Road, Bethlehem, PA 18018; and/or Bethlehem Catholic High School, 2133 Madison Ave., Bethlehem, PA 18017.

Arrangements were made by Connell Funeral Home Inc., Bethlehem.
