Small steps can lead to promising future

Saucon Valley HS’s Meghan Altemose has a promising future ahead of her in theatre. Starting her senior year, she already is a multiple time Freddy Award nominee, a two-time finalist in the Classical Singers Competition and has a scholarship offer from West Virginia University worth $89,000.

With a love for the arts beginning at a very early age, Meghan has continued to pursue her path with much success.

At age 3, Meghan began taking ballet lessons which initially sparked her interest in the performing arts. Her family’s constant trips to see her participate in plays and musicals eventually paid off when she was cast as lead in “The Nutcracker” at just 6 years old.

At this point her love for the stage officially blossomed.

“My favorite thing to do was see shows, anywhere - local high schools, regionals theatres, and Broadway,” Meghan says. These small steps would continue and lead to much promise in her teenage years.

At Saucon Valley, she has been a cast member on productions such as “ Nice Work If You Can Get It” and “ Thoroughly Modern Millie” in which she garnered two Freddy Award nominations.

Meghan also is a member of her school’s choir and select chamber choir. When not in school, she takes ballet and tap classes almost daily and she takes private vocal lessons.

In both 2016 and 2017 she decided to enter the Classical Singers Competition held in Boston. Through hard work and dedication, Meghan was named a finalist in the national competition both years.

Recently Meghan was invited to sing with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra in an outdoor concert Sept. 2 at Levitt Pavilion. Broadway Favorites were featured in the concert in which Meghan and Freddy Lead Actor winner Parkland HS senior Reese Diaz performed.

With a production of “The Music Man” slated for 2018 at Saucon Valley, Meghan’s future is looking bright. Even though she already received a scholarship offer from West Virginia University, she says she still plans to audition for several other colleges, but will most likely major in economics.

When asked for advice to those hoping to follow in her footsteps, she says, “Research to find the best teachers in your area for voice, dance and acting. Take opportunities to perform outside your school, including summer programs.

“See as much theatre as you can – we have really good college and regional theatre opportunities in the Lehigh Valley, and we are close to Philadelphia and New York.

“I think performance training is very useful for anyone,” she adds, “whether they want a career in the arts or not.”
