IIRP awards Shawn Szuch Scholarship

Melissa Ash, of Easton, an outreach educator at Allentown’s Lehigh Valley Crime Victims Council, has been awarded the first Shawn Szuch Scholarship by the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP) Graduate School, Bethlehem.

She runs workshops in area middle and high schools to help students understand violence, harassment and bullying and identify some of the signs to prevent such incidents from happening. Her goal is to help students maintain physical and emotional safety.

The Shawn Szuch Scholarship is awarded to a candidate pursing a Master of Science in Restorative Practices. The scholarships are in memory of Shawn Szuch, a young man who overcame adversity with courage and determination and gave his life for his country.

Alvernia students in service projects

Three Bethlehem residents took part in service projects around the City of Reading for Orientation Day of Service Aug. 18.

The ladies are Verbelin Garcia and Nyuada Harris, both studying nursing, and Regan Downey is studying psychology, all students at Alvernia.

Student ambassador at Susquehanna

Natasia Martin, of Bethlehem and a neuroscience major in the Class of 2020, is a student ambassador this year at Susquehanna University.

To become an ambassador, students must complete a written application and personal interview with the admissions staff and then complete an intensive training program.

New students at James Madison

Ally Small, a Communication Studies major, and Chloe Stevens, an International Business major, both of Bethlehem, are incoming freshman at James Madison University, Charlottesville, Va.

Hasenecz graduate assistant at Iowa

Elias Hasenecz, a resident of Bethlehem, has been named a graduate teaching assistant at The University of Iowa. He is a Moravian College magna cum laude graduate where he earned a bachelor’s degree in honors chemistry and was a chemistry tutor and lab teacher assistant.
