Attorney John Harrison, hired by South Whitehall to handle issues relating to the Econo Lodge, 1151 Bulldog Drive, provided some information at a recent commissioners’ meeting.
“The Econo Lodge is willingly discontinuing all long-term rentals as of Sept. 18,” Harrison said.
At previous meetings, residents had expressed concern over alleged illegal activities going on at the hotel and on their own streets by individuals residing at the establishment.
A shooting at the Econo Lodge during the summer, which affected an adjacent business, led neighbors to request help from the township to insure their safety.
South Whitehall Manager Renee Bickel commented on what has been done so far.
“We’re working with Attorney Harrison and conducted an investigation of the Econo Lodge,” Bickel said. “They [hotel personnel] were cooperative.”
Harrison explained long-term rental is 30 days or more.
He declined to answer a question about the zoning classification of the Econo Lodge property.
“I will not define what the zoning is there,” Harrison said.
He did not want to provide any additional information on his research or findings regarding the hotel.
“My work has not yet concluded,” Harrison said. It is an active investigation.”
Police Chief John Christman reported on the department’s surveillance of the Econo Lodge and surrounding neighborhoods.
“We continue to patrol the area,” Christman said. “We are making an effort to be there as much as we can.”
