WHS girls searching
Right now the Whitehall field hockey team is searching, searching for some offense, searching for some leadership, and most important, searching for an identity.
After getting shut out for the fourth time this season, the latest blanking at the hands of Northampton on Saturday, head coach Jenn Bodnar is also searching for some answers.
“We can’t win games when we don’t come out and play,” said Bodnar. “Right now we’re trying to find our identity, and we’re still looking for a leader, and still looking for someone to step up and show some heart out there, and I think that’s what we’re missing.”
Bodnar knew that every game would be a dogfight with teams at their level of ability, and right now her squad isn’t matching the intensity of their opponent.
“These teams are showing up and they want to win, and we’re playing like we don’t want to win; we’re not playing at that same heart level and enthusiasm and we’re just struggling to find out why,” said Bodnar.
With the loss, their record dips to 2-4 this season.
The Zephs have been victimized early in those losses, and that was the case again Saturday as the Kids scored four goals before the first half reached the midway point. They eventually won 6-0 for their fourth win of the season.
Bodnar said that type of domination has been “embarrassing,” and hopefully it’s something they’ll correct moving forward.
“Give credit to Northampton, they came out and played hard, and executed, and we didn’t,” said Bodnar.
Bodnar strongly believes that’s not indicative of the type of program they have to lose by 24 goals to three EPC South opponents, while also not managing a single tally in those losses.
“This is a challenging week, and need to figure out now, as a team, how we want this season to go, and make some decisions, and personnel changes.” said Bodnar.
Bodnar knew that as a young team, especially on defense, that there would be a learning curve, and that they would allow some goals. However, she also believed they could offset that by scoring goals.
“It’s pretty frustrating that we’re not clicking offensively, and we’re playing selfishly and not playing like a team, and we’re making basic hockey mistakes,” said Bodnar.
They had opportunities to score, especially in the second half, but Kid keeper Casey Borzillo came out to challenge every shot. She didn’t allow Whitehall’s shooters to get any good looks by eliminating open areas and angles. She finished with seven saves.
Northampton also had strong play by midfielder Morgan McEntire who was all over the field making sure she disrupted any offensive flow attempted by the Zephs.
Whitehall will now face Nazareth, Pleasant Valley and Bethlehem Catholic this week.
