Northampton gets by Zephyrs in tennis
Senior day took center stage when the Whitehall girls tennis team hosted Northampton on Monday, but in the end they lost a close match to their league rivals.
The Zephs recognized seniors Catherine Chen, Shaniyah Colon, Jacky Mansour and Teresa Nappo as the regular season enters its final week. Whitehall has a final match with Parkland remaining on its schedule before the postseason begins.
The Zephyrs are currently 6-7 overall and 5-7 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. Head coach Alex Green is pleased with the way their season’s unfolded, but also knows that some of the tossup matches slipped away this season.
“There’s probably one or two matches that we can look back on and say if a couple of things went differently, those matches could have gone in our favor,” said Green.
Green said it’s wasted energy dwelling on those losses.
“I’m proud of the wins that we had, and in those wins we performed really well,” he said.
Green said that they never played below their ability throughout the course of the season, relying on vets like Chen who was tied for the team lead in wins to provide some guidance.
Chen and No. 3 doubles partner Heylee Chan will soon be preparing for the EPC doubles tourney. They’ve been consistent winners all season and Green expects them to continue that trend in the postseason.
Green also expressed optimism about the future as all his singles players will return next season. Natalia Pedraza, Noel Yacoub and La’Naa Roberts have performed well and gained a lot of experience this season.
Yacoub was victorious at No. 2 against Northampton, winning 6-1, 6-3.
“She’s had a really good year,” said Green, noting with that win her record improves to 7-6 on the season.
Roberts, at No. 3, also won in straight sets in her match against Northampton.
Green said that Roberts has been struggling a little bit lately, and for her to get that win was really important.
Emma Garneau, who placed a couple of wicked winners in her doubles match against Northampton, is another experienced player returning. Both she and Nappo have been a solid pairing at No. 2 doubles this year and Green is anxious to see what they can do in the playoffs.
Nappo has been a four-year varsity player for the Zephs, a stalwart doubles player for the Zephs during that time. Green said that she and Garneau have a nice chemistry together. Chen, who ranks No. 1 in her senior class, is another seasoned vet whose been playing varsity for a few years. Green said that he bounces Chen around the lineup because of the senior’s versatility and adaptability. She’s been partnered with a number of different players all season.
“All she’s done is played well and win matches for us,” said Green. “She’s just a really impressive kid all round.”
Green said that nap and Chen who served as team captains, have accomplished a lot during their careers.
“Hopefully, we can accomplish a little bit more with them while they’re still here,” said Green. “They should be proud of the mark they left on the program.”
