Zephs move to 3-0

The Whitehall girls volleyball team’s fast start is powered by their front court prowess as they’ve taken control at the net in both their wins this season.

That hitting prowess was on display as they swept Pocono Mountain East last Thursday (25-8, 25-13, 25-14), raising their record to 2-0 on the young season. Outside hitter Kristin Spengler and middle hitter Alyson Peters combined for 30 kills, each walloping 15 apiece to pace the Zephs.

“I thought we dominated; I thought we played well,” said head coach Paul Abi-Daher.

He credited his team for staying focused against a team that’s still looking to establish a winning tradition.

Their front line was active throughout the match. Spengler got a number of her points via tips, while Peters relied more on overhand strikes. But with both players getting an equal number of kills, that meant they were getting the ball into the hands of their finishers.

“To me that’s a balanced offense when you have the middle and outside going,” said Abi-Daher.

They also got a strong performance from libero Taylor Levan who had 21 digs.

“She was nice in the back row and felt comfortable,” said Abi-Daher. “She anchored the back row which fed the front row to get us what we needed to get.”

Additionally, Amelia Ballard had 20 assists in the win.

In the clinching third set, the Zephs were locked in a back-and-forth game until they gained some separation when Spengler began serving with the team leading by a point, 11-10. They reeled off six consecutive points, thanks to a flurry of kills by Peters during that stretch. PME never recovered and the Zephs kept their foot on the gas for the 11-point win.

The Zephyrs followed that victory with a sweep over East Stroudsburg North on Monday, 25-14, 25-5, 25-1. With that win, the Zephs are now 3-0 on the season.
