WHS tennis team looking to make a push

With the Whitehall girls tennis season just past the midway point, the Zephyrs are making a strong push for the playoffs.

They’re continuing to wrack up wins, and currently sit at 5-5 (4-5, EPC) with their most recent wins over Pen Argyl and East Stroudsburg North.

That puts them in the middle of the pack in the EPC with fives matches left on their schedule.

Head coach Alex Green believes if they can reach eight or nine wins, they’ll qualify for the district playoffs. That’s certainly within their reach, but it means defeating Northampton and Allentown Central Catholic in those remaining games. Both the Kids (5-3) and the Vikettes (6-3) sit atop the Zephyrs in the standings.

Green said that while it will be a challenge to emerge with wins over those two teams, he’s confident that his team will give it their best effort.

“If we win those two, that would get us there,” said Green. “It would be really tough to do, and take a lot of effort, but we’re going to do our best.”

Green said that they’ve played well all season. That came through in their win over the Green Knights as they won 5-0 last week.

All three singles players emerged victorious in straight sets as No. 1 Natalia Pedraza won 6-4, 6-2 over Kayla Flyte. At No. 2, Noel Yacoub defeated Molly Kutz 6-0, 6-1, while La’Naa Roberts took down Marlya Samandzieva 7-5, 6-3.

The also won at doubles as Teresa Nappo and Emma Garneau won at No. 1, defeating Makayla Santiago and Morgan Haros 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2, Catherin Chen and Haylee Chan defeated Sofia Biondo and Gabriella King 6-0, 6-4.

Green said that Chen, a senior, has emerged as a versatile performer who’s been plugged in up and down their lineup. Green said that Chen is tied with the best win-loss record on the team, and that shines through wherever she plays.

“I’m really pleased with how she’s played all year, with different people and at different positions; it’s been a big help to us,” said Green.

Green also said that Garneau is staring to find her groove.

“She’s starting to play really well now,” said Green.

Garneau and Nappo have been a solid pairing for the Zephs throughout the season.

Green also likes the progress shown by Pedraza at No. 1 singles. He said that’s the experience she’s gaining this year will have a significant impact as she continues playing.

“She’s really someone to watch moving forward,” said Green.

They drew a step closer to a playoff berth with a 5-2 victory over Pocono Mountain East on Tuesday.
