Whitehall golf squad picks up another victory
The Whitehall golf team keeps churning out victories this season, their latest win coming Tuesday against East Stroudsburg North as they look toward the postseason in a couple of weeks.
Their win against the Timberwolves raises their record to 6-8 overall and 6-7 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
It’s quite a turnaround for a team that’s seen some lean times recently. But this year it’s been a different story. Head coach John Conrad said it’s especially gratifying for seniors Ben Antonchak, Patrick Skinner, Tyler Ringenberger and Griffin Wampole who have experienced the tough times.
“It’s good to see that the kids who are seniors now, who saw those low points, have helped bring our program back to having a good reputation,” said Conrad. “We’re not just an easy win.”
One win that slipped away this season was their match against Freedom. Conrad said they were looking to avenge last year’s loss when they lost by that half stroke when the match went to the sixth score. He said they were excited to play the Pates again, but the Bethlehem bunch eked out another win, this time winning by five strokes. They lost 455-460.
“They put up a good score, a score that would have beat a lot of teams, but unfortunately Freedom played a little better that day,” said Conrad.
In the win against ESN, Skinner was once again low man, shooting a 76. Antonchak followed with an 82, while Leah Coleman had an 83 and Nick Rohn finished with a 92.
Conrad said that depth has been a key component in helping them post the best five scores of a round. In past years, that top five was a pretty rigid number, and if one player had an off day, it could sink the whole ship. This season more players have become valuable pieces, players like Josh Mallory and Rohn who have been competitive all season and have helped the team win those close matches by shooting low rounds.
“If someone had a bad round, someone else has picked them up,” said Conrad. “That’s been the difference.”
To underscore that point, Conrad said that Rohn’s tied for second in scoring average this season.
“He really put the work into it in the offseason, and it’s paying off,” said Conrad.
As the regular season winds down, the Zephs will prepare for the EPC Golf Tournament Team Championships at Woodstone Golf Club on Sept. 25. Conrad said it’s an excellent opportunity to beat conference foes and get a little revenge on the teams that defeated them earlier in the season. They’ll once again have their eyes set on posting a better aggregate score among their top five witch Freedom in mind once they hit the links.
