Betty J. Kline

Betty Jeanette Kline, 96, formerly of Emmaus, died Sept. 4, 2017. Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late Ray G. and Lillian (Edwards) Wetherhold. She married the late Charles James Kline Jr. in 1945, and they observed their 63rd anniversary before his passing.

She graduated from Emmaus High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a physical education degree from East Stroudsburg State College.

She taught in Florida and Pennsylvania, last working for Southern Lehigh School District in Coopersburg. She continued to teach continuing education classes in memoir writing and mid-life physical education for the East Penn School District into her seventies. She was a photographer and writer for the Emmaus Free Press.

She loved pets, especially dogs, and managed to combine that love and her interest in photography into a freelance animal photography business after she retired from teaching. She was an avid nature lover and helped establish the recycling program in Emmaus long before it caught on in other areas. All her children recycle to this day. She was the secretary of the Friends of the Emmaus Public Library.

She is survived by four children, Sharon Browne, Carter, Tracey Carey and Andrea Kurtz. She had 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and Ray Wetherhold.

Visitation will be held 9 to 10 a.m. Sept. 17 followed by memorial services 10 a.m. in the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main St., Emmaus.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Alzheimer’s Society, or the Humane Society.
