Portion of Huckleberry now open

A project begun last year to improve a 1-mile section of Huckleberry Road east of Applewood Drive is now open.

South Whitehall Manager of Public Works Jeff Clapper explained in June the road needed to be repaired but required a lot of preliminary base work.

“This was slowed down drastically because of hitting rock,” Clapper said. “We had 20 inlets to install and a bunch of piping but had to dig through a lot of rock to do it.”

He said the Huckleberry Road improvement was helped by a grant from Lehigh County.

In other matters, Peter Pineda, manager of the township authority, reported South Whitehall is working with Allentown to comply with an Environmental Protection Agency directive which needs a responsible reply by Dec. 31.

“We have an EPA order to seal up our system to avoid overflow of sanitary sewer,” Pineda said.

All the entities which convey discharges to Allentown must work together to avoid having raw sewage discharged into the street or streams after large storms.

“This is years in the planning,” Pineda said. “Big capital expenditures are needed for sewer interceptor lines and infrastructure.”

Commissioners were to examine the topic at a workshop session and learn how costs are determined for each municipality discharging into the Allentown system.

In other business, Parks and Recreation Manager Randy Cope reported registrations for the children’s summer program increased from 278 in 2016 to 357 for this year.
