Golf team sits at 5-6
The Whitehall golf team has managed to win one match each time they’ve stepped onto the course this season, making a bid to become one of the better teams in the league this year.
With their win over Stroudsburg last week, they’re now 5-6 on the year which puts them in the middle of the pack within the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
The Zephyrs have all ready eclipsed last season’s win total, and head coach John Conrad said that before the year started he gathered his team together and told them how he envisioned the upcoming season. He said that there were matches they should win, matches they could win, and matches they probably won’t win, at least not right now.
And that’s how it’s played out so far this season and he attributes their success to a strong work ethic.
“The kids are putting in the time and it’s nice to reach some of the benefits from working so hard,” said Conrad.
One of those five wins was against Easton. Whitehall bested the Red Rovers by three strokes in their August 24th quad match that also featured Bethlehem Catholic and Emmaus. Whitehall shot a 489 to finish third, while Easton shot a 492. Conrad said it was one of the signature wins of the program since Easton had defeated them by 37 strokes last year.
Conrad said that Easton’s roster remains similar to the one they had in 2016, but this year’s Zephyr team is brimming with talent and confidence that’s helped them win close matches.
“We’re winning these close matches, whereas last year we weren’t winning them,” said Conrad.
In the win against the Red Rovers, Patrick Skinner shot a 90 to lead the Zephs, while Ben Antonchak posted a 93 and Josh Mallory and Tyler Ringenberger each scored 100. Nick Rohn shot a 106 for the Zephs to complete their scoring.
But the Zephs saved their best performance of the season to date for their match against Stroudsburg. They defeated the Mounties 441-447, paced by the torrid round of Skinner who shot a 77. The match was played at Willow Brook Golf Course, and Conrad said that was Skinner’s lowest round at their home course since he’s been playing varsity golf.
Leah Coleman also had a personal best against Stroudsburg. Coleman shot an 85, good for second among their qualifiers. Conrad said that is was Coleman’s best round ever as a Whitehall golfer.
Nick Rohn also broke 90, shooting an 89 to finish third for the Zephs. It was also the best round of his career.
“Nick came on and solidified the day for us,” said Conrad.
Antonchak finished with a 95, while Ringenberger also posted a 95 to help the Zephs earn their fifth win of the season.
Conrad said that they have their sights set on Freedom this week. That was another close match last year that wound up going to the sixth score as the Zephyrs were edged out by the Pats, 472-472.1 They had been tied at 472, forcing that next decider.
“That match is still on our mind,” said Conrad.
