Field hockey team starts 2-0
Northampton’s field hockey team was schedule to play two games on grass this year. Ironically, both of them were the first two games of the season.
Fortunately, the Konkrete Kids took care of both of them.
Northampton opened the season with two impressive shutout victories, throttling Catasauqua, 8-0, and blanking Bethlehem Catholic, 4-0.
“We got our grass games done,” said head coach Carrie Saul. “We had two nice wins. We had a balanced attack and that’s what we will be looking for. Now, we can get back to turf, but it was a good way to begin the season.”
Saul noted a solid defensive effort in both games helped spur the offense. She credited the play of Tori Unangst.
“She (Unangst) was a stalwart out there,” said Saul. “She played well up the middle and had some gorgeous hits. Our goalie (Cassie Borzilla) only had three saves and she wasn’t that busy.
“It came down to our play up the middle that really made the difference. We played very well defensively and that really helped us get on track. We had two strong efforts.”
The Kids’ main offensive effort came from freshmen Olivia Lorah and Morgan McEntire, who together accounted for five of their 12 goals. Senior Morgan Mullen provided experience and leadership on the field.
“The freshmen really stepped up and did nice job for us,” said Saul. Morgan (McEntire) has helped along with the other seniors to form a good chemistry here. We basically have a young team.”
Saul stated the club has seven seniors, seven juniors, five sophomores, and 11 freshmen on the roster this fall.
Still, she has appreciated how her club had jelled.
“I think we have a very balanced team,” she said. “That’s what I like about this team. They are helping each other out well, and that’s a good thing to see.”
The Kids will meet Liberty and East Stroudsburg North this week. Saul knows her team’s schedule is on the verge of getting busy.
“This is a great start for us and we know we’ll have a full slate ahead,” she said. “Our team is coming together well and that can be a good situation for us.”
