According to information provided by Lehigh County DUI Task Force Coordinator and South Whitehall Police Sgt. George Hummel, the Lehigh Valley Regional DUI Task Force will be conducting sobriety checkpoints in Lehigh County during the month of September.
A sobriety checkpoint is a traffic safety checkpoint wherein police systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observe drivers for articulable signs and/or behaviors normally associated with drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs.
The sobriety checkpoint is intended to reduce serious injury and fatal crashes caused by impaired drivers and to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers traveling on Pennsylvania highways.
During the Labor Day holiday weekend, Sept. 1-3, Pennsylvania State Police Troop M investigated 43 crashes, three of which were alcohol related. Fourteen accidents resulted in injuries; no fatalities were reported.
According to the report, Troop M issued 1,846 citations, of which 589 were for speeding, 67 were for seatbelt violations, 20 were for child passenger seat violations and 36 were for DUI.
Troop M covers Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks counties.
