REGIONAL Steamtown Railfest set for Labor Day
“Transition from Steam to Diesel,” Railfest 2017, will be held September 2 and 3 at Steamtown National Historic Site, Lackawanna Ave. at Cliff St., Scranton, 18503. Tom Nemeth, editor and publisher of Railpace magazine, is the grand marshal.
A 7,500-pound 1925 Whitcomb gasoline-powered locomotive, courtesy of the National Museum of Industrial History, Bethlehem, will be on display. There will be maintenance-of-way and hand (pump) car rides, World War I, blacksmithing and locomotive shop demonstrations; art and railroad photographs exhibits; and visits by “Miss Phoebe Snow”. Children’s activities include 1/8-inch scale steam train rides, O- and N-gauge model train layouts, magicians and a “selfie” photo booth.
Historic diesel locomotives to Moscow will depart the Steamtown Boarding Platform at 12:30 p.m. and return at about 3 p.m. on the event days. Fares include the park’s daily entrance fee. All Railfest activities and programs are included in the park’s daily entrance fee for visitors age 16 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There is an additional cost for the “Scranton Limited” short train ride.

Erie-Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society, Dunmore, will hold a speakeasy night and a dinner on the train mystery theater night September 1 and 2 at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel. Information is available at www.eldcps.org.
Lackawanna County’s Electric City Trolley Museum will hold trolley rides along a portion of the former Laurel Line and the La Festa Italiana at Courthouse Square, downtown Scranton. There will be free shuttle service between Steamtown NHS, the Scranton Iron Furnace State Park and La Festa during the park’s operating hours on both days.
