David K. Fowler

David “Ken” Fowler, 85, formerly of Lower Macungie Township, died July 29, 2017, at Westminster Village, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Shultz) Fowler. He was the son of the late David Howell and Julia (Vaught) Fowler.

He started playing the organ at the local Baptist church while still in high school and continued playing the organ for several churches across the country for almost 50 years. During that time, he graduated from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, married and started a family; joined the Army and served as the organist at the U.S. Army Post Chapel, Fort Knox, Ky.; finished his Master in Music degree from Indiana University, Indiana; obtained teaching certifications in Indiana and New York; taught music theory, voice and organ in a senior high school. He briefly left music to be a reliability engineer in the space program but returned to work for the Allen Organ Company.

After retirement, he started a home-based business, The Grand Staff, Engraver of Manuscript Music, where he edited and engraved manuscripts for the Moravian Music Foundation in Winston-Salem, N.C., and engraved choral works for The Bach Choir of Bethlehem. He also served as the assistant librarian and Voorhees Collection librarian for the Allentown Symphony Orchestra.

He loved aviation, building and flying model airplanes. He obtained his private pilot’s license and flew for both business and pleasure. He volunteered regularly at the Miller-Keystone blood bank.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Allentown.

He is survived by his children: Lynne Fowler-Blatt, of Lower Macungie Township; Paul and his wife Teresa, of Dixon, Mo., Amy, of Lower Macungie Township; Laura and her husband David Blauch, of Mooresville, N.C.; grandchildren, Nathan Blatt and his fiancee, Giselle Brown, of Lower Macungie Township.; Julieanne, Sarah, William, and Thomas, of Dixon, Mo.; Timothy Melton and Kathleen Melton, of Mooresville, N.C.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Aug. 4, at the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 225 Elm St., Emmaus. A calling hour will be held noon to 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
