Senior discount for cable

The new franchise agreement between South Whitehall and Service Electric Cable TV includes a discount for senior citizens and veterans who qualify.

At a recent meeting, township Solicitor Christopher McLean explained the two entities started talking two years ago about renewal of the franchise.

He recalled at that time, a meeting was held to receive public comment, and the major request from residents was a senior discount.

Tim Himmelwright, communications and public affairs manager for the cable company, offered comment.

“This is the first opportunity for a senior discount [with Service Electric] in South Whitehall,” Himmelwright said.

A similar agreement with RCN was approved by commissioners within the last year.

Himmelwright said a form will be offered as an application for the discount which will be open to low-income seniors and qualifying veterans.

He said a copy of a PACE or PACENET medical card or a Medicaid card, or proof of Supplemental Security Income or Veterans’ Service Benefits should be sent along with the form.

Himmelwright noted the rules are based on state guidelines.

The discount is $2 off the Lifeline Basic 39 channel pack and $4 off for Full Basic Cable per month.

The franchise agreement allows Service Electric to maintain, construct, operate and upgrade its cable system over, under and along township rights-of-way.

Franchise fees for the cable company’s use of the right-of-ways are allowed by federal law.

South Whitehall receives a 5-percent franchise fee from each monthly cable bill.
