If your family is like mine, summer means dentist appointments, yearly physicals and even an annual visit to the vet for our furry family members. When you go to these appointments, remember the Pennsylvania School Health Law requires a physical for all students entering either kindergarten or first (whichever year they enter the public school system), sixth and 11th grades. A dental exam is required for those students in kindergarten or first, third and seventh grades. The forms are available on the school website or at each school building.

If you have a high schooler this year, I can almost guarantee they have a summer reading project. None of my boys were big readers, so this was always a struggle to get them to take time out of their busy schedule to read. So, this year instead of what they would call a boring novel, Luke picked a biography of Derek Jeter. I will admit, it is still not something he is thrilled about, but finding something he is interested in, helps to make it bearable. So, his advice is to “read a little every day and don’t leave it until the end of the summer.” Here’s hoping he takes his own advice!

Since I am always looking for things to do, today I went on Pinterest and looked up “things to do in Allentown, Pa.” I was amazed at what came up. From “10 unique day trips,” “10 Pennsylvania Roadside Oddities” to “15 Terrifying Places in PA,” there is something for everyone from all price ranges. If you are on Pinterest, check it out.

The Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church continues its summer concert series 7 p.m. July 25 with a performance by the Pioneer Band of Allentown, then again 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1 with the Jerusalem Singers.

The Devonshire drop-off will be open July 29 and Aug. 1. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Surround yourself with good people. People who are going to be honest with you and look out for your best interests.” Derek Jeter
