Patricia “Rusty” Whitehurst Young, 86, of Macungie, died July 12, 2017, in her home. She was the wife of the late William J. Young who died March 14, 2010. Born in Troy, N.Y., she was the eldest child of James T. Whitehurst Jr. and Anne (Simms) Whitehurst.

She was a member of the Class of 1947 at Emma Willard School, Troy, N.Y. and the Class of 1951 at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley.

She moved to Allentown with her first husband, Luther R. Campbell Jr. in 1954. She immediately began to direct her considerable managerial and fundraising skills into volunteer work in the community. In 1956 she chaired the American Heart Association’s local annual campaign. She served as president of the junior section of the Allentown Women’s Club 1958 to 1960; committee member of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra; president of the Allentown Community Concert Association 1960 to 1966; chair of several United Way divisions including founder of the Women’s Educational Liaison Division, United Way in 1961 and the third recipient of the WELD Bowl in 1964; president of Planned Parenthood Association of NE PA 1970 to 1974; director of Park and Shop 1970 to 1975; member of the Muhlenberg College Board of Associates 1956 to 1988; multiple roles in YM/YWCA activities over the years including, member of the YW Board in the late 1950s and early 1960s, chair of the YM/YWCA opening of the joint facility on South 15th St., co-chair of the YM/YWCA debt elimination campaigns in 1965 to 1966 and 1975 to 1976 and president of the YWCA Board of Trustees 1986 to 1988; vice president of the Allentown Center City Association; chair of the Major Gift Division of the Girl’s Club Building Campaign in 1987; and director of Kidspeace 1993 to 1995.

Her first love was the Allentown Art Museum, where she was founder and first president of SOTA, the Society of the Arts 1964 to 1968 and headed major divisions of several campaigns. Her contributions were publicly recognized when she was chosen as the honoree at the museum’s annual gala dinner in 1997.

She married William J. Young in 1978 and continued her involvement in many charitable arts-related activities. In 1986, her husband retired after a lifetime career in the cement manufacturing industry. The couple was inseparable and spent many happy years together with shared interest in travel and fly fishing.

She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.

She was a member of Lehigh Country Club, Saucon Valley Country Club, The Princeton Club, Allentown Art Museum and the Lehigh County Historical Society.

She is survived by a niece, Anne and her husband Karl Gallant, of Fairfax Station, Va.; stepchildren, Mark Johnson Young and his wife Jennifer, of Lititz, Joseph Peter and his wife Lauren Geiger, of Plainfield, Vt., Mardi and her husband Skip Flinn, of Park City, Utah; nine step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gail Whitehurst Rogers Reitz and twin brothers, J. Thomas Whitehurst III and Norman W. Whitehurst.
