No space for truck parking

After more than a year of scrutinizing township streets in search of parking spaces for oversize vehicles, commissioners have not been able to find anything suitable.

The issue arose quite some time ago when a township resident was having difficulty finding a place to park his truck without raising objections from neighbors or nearby businesses.

At the June 21 meeting, Board of Commissioners President Tori Morgan commented on the matter.

“Our hope was to come up with some parking for oversize vehicles,” Morgan said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t come up with much.”

Commissioner David Bond also commented.

“We’ve done all we can do,” he said. “We looked at nearly every street in the township.

“This is a widespread problem - not just for South Whitehall.”

He reported factors such as the weight and size of the vehicle, sight distances and stormwater drainage had to be taken into consideration.

“Our ultimate goal is to protect all residents and businesses,” Bond noted. “If you have an oversized vehicle sitting across the street all week, it can devalue your property.”

Morgan said drivers should feel free to communicate with the township.

“We’ll continue to work with anyone who comes to us with questions or concerns,” Morgan added.

Bond noted operators of large vehicles should look for alternatives to public street parking and may have to make arrangements with private property owners.
