William Koelsch Moening
William Koelsch Moening, 100, of Emmaus, died at his home, July 6, 2017. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Jeanne (Story) Moening, to whom he was married for 67 years. Born in Lockland, Ohio, he was the son of the late William Conrad Moening and Ursula B. (Koelsch) Moening.
He was a graduate of Western Hills High School, Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Purdue University. During World War II he moved his family to Detroit, Mich. where he worked as a draftsman for Strong, Carlisle and Hammond, involved in the manufacturing of war materials. Following the war he moved his family to Emmaus, and worked as a machine tool salesman for Machinery Associates of suburban Philadelphia. His major clients included Bethlehem Steel, Mack Truck, Reading Railroad and the Chrysler Defense Plant. He formed Valley Forge Machine Tool Co. in 1960 and represented several clients for the next decade.
He had been active in the Emmaus Lions Club and participated in minstrel shows during the 1950s.
He was a long-time member of Lehigh Country Club, and during the 1950s and 1960s was chairman of the swimming pool program.
He was an enthusiastic “car guy,” collecting numerous antique and classic cars.
He was formerly a licensed pilot and enjoyed boating at his vacation home in Avalon, N.J. for many years.
He is survived by children, Barbara Jean Lekorenos, of Anderson, S.C.; Colonel William C., USAF retired, of San Antonio, Texas, James Louis, of Allentown, Carolyn Elizabeth Digel, of Smethport, Marjorie Hamill, of Emmaus, Anne Louise Smiley, of Allentown, and Sue Ellen Hamilton, of Port O’Connor, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to the Emmaus Public Library, St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, or the Wildlands Conservancy, Emmaus.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. July 15 in the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main St., Emmaus. A viewing will be held 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
