St. John’s Lutheran Church, 18 S. Third St., will hold its annual summer Vacation Bible School this coming week, July 17-21. The VBS program, 6:30-8:30 p.m., will take place in the church social hall.

Open to all children in the community, preschool through eighth grade, the theme is “Mighty Fortress: In Jesus, the Victory is Won.”

VBS superintendent Gail Yudt said crafts, snacks and fun will be part of the religious experience.

Then on July 23, there will be a closing program and church service at the Coplay Parkway pavilion.

Coplay Senior Citizens will hold an open house July 19 at its meeting place, Commitment to Family & Community, 165 Cherry St. Doors will open noon; the meeting and social time is 1-4 p.m.

President Dale C. Simon said the seniors group formed back in 1969 and continues to grow and bond as seniors “come together with [fellow seniors] for an afternoon of friendship and fun.”

The group in 1970 formally became a full fledged organization - Coplay Senior Citizens.

A twilight evening is in store for the public 6-8:30 p.m. July 19 at the community plaza gazebo. Steve Brosky and Jimmy Meyers will perform. It is a free event.

Samuel Owens Restaurant will have beverages and food available. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the community’s planning commission and park and recreation board.

A family splash and dance night is on tap at the borough Parkway Pool, 2 Keefer St., 6-8:30 p.m. July 20. Games, contests and dance is on the itinerary. Freddie Fredericks Jr. will play the music.

There is some movement, not much though, on the demolition and construction of the Coplay-Northampton Bridge, a three-year project, putting the timetable for the new bridge on the calendar for June 2020.

Closed since May 1, the light standards have been taken down. A fencing company was underneath the bridge late last week on the Coplay side to erect fencing. Verizon also was on the scene removing wires.

Thus far, no construction trailer by the general contractor has set up shop.
