Frank Bachman Gutshall, Lehigh University golf coach
Frank “Kelly” Bachman Gutshall, 92, of Springtown, died June 22, 2017, at the inpatient hospice unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. Born in Hellertown, he was a son of the late Foster L. and Clara E. (Bachman) Gutshall. He was the husband of Marguerite (Dimmig) Gutshall for 69 years.
He was a 1942 graduate of Springfield High School.
He was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He attended Muhlenberg College. He transferred to and graduated from Lehigh University, where he had earned a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration.
He was a car under coater and then was a salesman for his father, F.L. Gutshall, Springtown. He and his two brothers later opened Gutshall’s Chevrolet, Hellertown, from which he retired in 1990 after 40 years. He was on the Chevrolet dealers planning committee and was a president of the A.B.E. Chevrolet Dealers Association.
He was on the Christ Lutheran Church, Springtown, council. He was a past president of the Hellertown Lions Club, Springtown Fire Company and Springtown Sportsman’s Association. He was a member of the board of directors for Indian Valley Country Club, Merchant’s Bank and First National Bank. He was, from 1990 to 2006, the Lehigh University golf coach, where he twice won the Patriot League Coach of the Year award. He had 13 holes in one, won the Indian Valley Country Club championship 12 times in four decades, and played in 13 different countries and on 276 different courses in during his career. He was inducted into the GALV Hall of Fame and received the distinguished service award from Philadelphia Golf Association.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Rand F. and his wife Theresa of Whitehall, Pamela E. and her husband Chris Page of Coopersburg and Brenda Lee Kotroutsos; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Donald “Popeye” T. and John “Jack” L. Gutshall.
