G. Wesley Sell
G. Wesley Sell, 86, musician, teacher and Christian churchman, died June 11, 2017, at his home. He was the husband of Althea N. (Hawk) and celebrated 62 years of marriage June 11. Born in Allentown, he was the son of Alvin D. and Hattie M. (Heffelfinger) Sell.
He was a 1948 graduate of Allen High School, earned his Bachelor of Science in music education from West Chester State Teachers College in 1952.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army Medical Service.
In 1955 he received a master’s degree in music education from the University of Illinois.
He was the vocal music teacher for two years in Toppenish, Wash., returning to Allentown to serve as organist and choir director at St. John’s U.C.C. from 1957 until 1972. From 1964 to 1992 he taught high school choral music and elementary music in the East Penn School District.
As a young singer he sang in many local church choirs, Seibert EC, Grace Episcopal, St. Paul’s and St. John’s Lutheran churches. He performed with the Muhlenberg Opera Workshop, Masterworks Chorus and the Bach Choir and served in the Lehigh Valley Chapter of American Guild of Organists.
In his later years he became active in the Central Moravian Church choir and initiated the World Import Shop with profits earmarked for mission work in Sikonge, Tanzania.
He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the world returning to share their beautiful slides.
He enjoyed gardening, wood carving and other creative interests. He will be remembered for his pursuit of excellence in everything he did.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Nannette and her husband John Parry; sons Eric, and Phillip and his wife Donna (Cressman); 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Verna Meckes and Janet Dankel.
