Coplay: Scoreboard dedication is Saturday
A large crowd is expected noon Saturday at Sammy Balliet Stadium for the dedication of the impressive state-of-the-art digital scoreboard in the outfield. Local dignitaries, sports figures and others, including an IronPigs mascot, will participate.
The stadium grounds has the enviable reputation as one of the finest diamonds in the region, where Curt Simmons of Egypt and Phillies fame honed his pitching skills.
Although one of the first stadiums to have lighting for night games, the poles and lights were dismantled in recent years because of deterioration. The goal is to replace the lights - a daunting task because of costs - but nevertheless a project for the future.

With the light standards on the Coplay-Northampton Bridge removed as the first part of demolition work on the bridge connecting the two boroughs, it appears no other work is underway since the bridge’s closure May 31. Several men in white construction hard hats were observed recently on the Northampton side of the bridge. It was said personnel aligned with utilities were at the site.
