Area senior citizen volunteers honored

Five Bethlehem area residents are among those honored by The Advisory Council of the Northampton County Area Agency on Aging for contributing their time and talents for the benefit of others in the community. The “Outstanding Senior Awards” Program took place April 27, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Bethlehem.

Suzanne Boundy of Bethlehem has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for over 20 years, and has traveled to Mississippi at least twice to assist with rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina. The Bethlehem Public Library Book Drive, WDIY Public Radio, and the “Well Read Hatters”, are among other groups benefitting from Boundy’s volunteerism.

Betty Gailey of Hanover Township, Northampton County, has volunteered at Meals on Wheels of Northampton County since 2014 delivering 3-5 day/week, and also volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank, The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, and Miller Keystone Blood Bank. A serious health problem intervened, but Gailey is getting back to doing what she loves.

Ruth Mary McIlroy of Bethlehem Township volunteers weekly in the guidance office at Wilson Area HS, and has done so for approximately four years, providing general secretarial support. McIlroy is also a Past Matron of the Eastern Star, Easton Branch, and also volunteers regularly at Safe Harbor Easton and at her church.

Marlene Walker of Bethlehem volunteers every Thursday at Fountain Hill ES, spending 30 minutes each with five students whom she serves as a mentor.

Other county residents honored are Harriet Abt of Washington Township, Sherman LaBarre of Portland, Beverly Lambert of Forks Township, Mary Jane Long of Palmer Township, Mark W. Queen of Walnutport, and Linda Roberts of Easton. Joan McBride of Easton received an Intergenerational Award. Also recognized was the The Sit & Sew Group of the Easton Area Lifestlye Campus in Forks Township.

The Northampton County Area Agency on Aging is that part of county government which exists to maintain and enhance the independence and dignity of adults age 60 and over.

Local woman named Buckle scholarship winner

Elizabeth Ritter, a chemistry major from Bethlehem, was recently awarded the Jack C. and Janet B. Buckle Scholarship at Lycoming College’s annual Honors Convocation.

To qualify, the junior has made an unusual contribution to campus life through leadership in student activities. She also received the IRUSKA Honor Society Award for outstanding contribution to campus life in one or more student activities.

Phi Kappa Phi selects local resident

Alesha Seifert, of Bethlehem, was recently initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, was initiated at Salisbury University.

Phi Epsilon Kappa names two

Sarah Kuehner and Alexandra McGivern, of Bethlehem, were inducted into Phi Epsilon Kappa, the national honor society in physical education, at the University of Scranton. To be invited to join, the two junior year exercise science majors earned an overall minimum grade point average of 3.3, and a 3.5 average in exercise science courses.
