Softball falls to EHS

The Zephyr softball team’s quest for a district championship ended Tuesday with a loss to Easton in the quarters.

Easton, who came into the tourney as the 4th seed, hosted Whitehall, the 5th seed, to begin district action for both squads. It was a rematch of a game played less than two weeks ago when they met in the final game of the regular season, a game in which the Red Rovers won 9-8 on their final at-bat.

This time the big blow came in the third inning as Alexis Jenkins smacked a three-run homer to put them up 3-0. They tacked on another run in that inning for a 4-0 lead, and then had to withstand a furious two-out rally by the Zephs in the sixth, the big blast a two-run homer by Casey Cunningham that cut the Rovers lead to 4-3.

However, that was as close as the Zephs would get as Easton shut the door in the final inning for the win.

Head coach Alexis Berg Townsend said that it’s always disappointing when the season ends, especially when the team has a strong group of seniors, many of whom have played since their freshman seasons. The seniors include Kay Solderitch, Mackenzie Guzy, Ashlee Brosky, Cara Bonshak, Lauren Peters and Courtney Grim.

When the all-star teams were selected this year, Guzy, a catcher, was named to the first team for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. Earning Honorable Mentions were Solderitch as an outfielder and Brosky as a pitcher.

As the game against Easton unfolded, Berg-Townsend knew that her team would rally.

“They fought until the end,” said Berg-Townsend. “Going down 4-0, the game could have easily gotten out of reach, but they continued to battle. Team and Zephyr pride rang through the entire time.”

The Zephs had two runners on in the fifth when a liner by Brosky looked like it might fall to push those baserunners across, but a diving catch ended the threat.

They came back in their next at-bat and got their first run with a Veronica Rodriguez RBI. That was followed by the Cunningham blast over the fence to make it a one-run game.

Solderitch got the start for the Zephs and the lefty allowed just five hits. The senior struck out seven Rovers and walked eight over seven innings. She probably deserved a better fate since she held the Rovers scoreless through the six of the seven innings she worked.

Berg-Townsend said that losing this crop of seniors won’t be easy. But she said that they should collectively be proud of all that they’ve done this season. They finished the year 13-9.

“It was a fun season, a memorable season,” said Berg-Townsend.
